The Abyssinians Satta Massagana
One of the biggest early Roots anthems! The Abyssinians’ “Satta Massagana”, a Rastafarian hymn based on the Ethiopian Amharic language (it means “Give Thanks” in Amharic). It was originally recorded for Studio 1 in 1969 and embodied the spirituality that became synonymous with the group; the ultimate expression of which was their first full album (“Satta Massagana”) released in 1976 – now regarded as one of the greatest in Jamaican music. The group continue to perform in their original line-up (Donald Manning, Bernard Collins and Linford Manning) and still retain the energy and supreme vocal harmony from this landmark tune. I saw The Abyssinians in 2010 at The Leamington Assembly and would recommend any fan of reggae music (or music in general) to make the effort to see them live.
